The Next Level

empathy first master communication Mar 16, 2025

Over the past year, I've watched hundreds of agents commit themselves to learning Tactical Empathy. I've seen you practice Labels and Mirrors, wrestle with Calibrated Questions, and work to integrate these powerful tools into your client interactions.

I've also witnessed your struggles:

"I know what to say in role play, but it flies out of my head with real clients."

"I understand the concept, but it still feels mechanical when I use it."

"I can't seem to adapt these tools to different personality types."

These challenges aren't signs of failure—they're natural steps on the path to mastery. And they've highlighted something crucial: to truly excel with Tactical Empathy, you need more than just the tools. You need to understand the deeper human dynamics that make those tools work.

We've listened to your challenges, observed your journey, and adapted our approach to better support you on the road to mastery.

So today, following up on Steve’s announcement of the rebranded “Performance Six”, I'm here to announce the evolution of our fifth building block. We're expanding the building block formerly known as ‘Tactical Empathy’ into a more comprehensive concept: “Mastering Communication”.

This isn't just a name change—it's a significant expansion that places Tactical Empathy within a broader framework of elite communication skills.

💬 Why the Change?

Let's start with what's not changing: Tactical Empathy remains the heart of our coaching. It's still the most powerful approach to building trust-based influence with your clients. The tools you've come to know and love—Labels, Mirrors, Calibrated Questions, Dynamic Silence, Summaries—aren't going anywhere!

But here’s what we’ve observed through our coaching: agents who truly excel with Tactical Empathy aren't just applying the techniques—they understand the why behind them. They grasp the psychological and emotional foundations that make these tools so effective, so we need to bring those concepts front and center for you.

Think about it this way:

Learning Tactical Empathy is like learning to play a musical instrument. First, you master the basic techniques—where to place your fingers, how to produce the right notes, how to follow a piece of sheet music. These fundamentals are essential.

But becoming a true musician requires more. You need to understand music theory, develop an ear for subtle variations in tone, grasp the emotional intention behind a composition, and ultimately develop your own authentic style. The difference between a technically proficient player and a moving performer lies in this deeper understanding.

The same principle applies to communication. The tools of Tactical Empathy are like those basic musical techniques. They're essential and powerful fundamentals. Mastery in their use comes from understanding the emotional intelligence, psychological dynamics, and subtle human patterns that make those tools truly sing.

💬 What "Mastering Communication" Includes

Here’s some of the what this expanded building block will encompass:

  • The Science of Empathy - Understanding the neurological basis of empathy, the empathy-trust connection, and what stands in its way.
  • Communication & Identity - Exploring how our personal histories and identities shape our communication patterns
  • The Psychology of Client Relationships - Recognizing unconscious client expectations and effectively managing the natural power imbalance in professional relationships
  • Advanced Emotional Navigation - Detecting subtle resistance before it becomes overt objection and maintaining your center during emotional intensity
  • The Ethics of Influence - Mastering the crucial difference between ethical influence and manipulation.
  • Cultural Intelligence - Recognizing how cultural background shapes decision-making styles and adapting your approach accordingly
  • Advanced Client Psychology - Understanding the hidden fears driving client behavior and supporting clients through emotional transitions

All of these elements work together to create a comprehensive system for becoming an elite communicator—one who can navigate any client situation with confidence, skill, and genuine connection.

💬 How This Benefits You

You might be thinking, "This sounds great, but I'm still trying to get comfortable with basic Labels and Mirrors. Why complicate things?"

Here's why this matters for you, regardless of where you are in your Tactical Empathy journey:

When you understand the psychological foundations beneath the tools, you'll find yourself:

  • Using the tools more fluidly and naturally
  • Adapting them more effectively to different personality types
  • Recognizing subtle emotional shifts before they become problems
  • Developing greater confidence in difficult conversations
  • Building deeper and more authentic client connections

You'll move from being someone who uses Tactical Empathy to someone who embodies it—a true master communicator whose very presence creates trust and psychological safety.

It's the difference between following a framework and truly owning the conversation—between mechanical application and artful mastery.

💬 What This Means for Your Coaching

If you're currently in one of our coaching programs, you'll begin to notice this expanded approach in how we frame and discuss communication challenges. The tools you know and love will still be there, but they'll be embedded in richer context.

In role play, we'll be integrating more discussion of the psychological dynamics at play in various scenarios, helping you understand not just what to say, but why it works.

For those in our Daily Calls and Small Group Coaching, you'll see us referencing these broader concepts as we address your questions and challenges.

And you’ll have the opportunity to take a deep dive into all of it in our upcoming 10 Week Mastering Communications course, details coming soon.

💬 Why This Matters Now

In today's real estate landscape, with the NAR settlement having changed how we structure our businesses as well as how we’re perceived by the public, the ability to create true, trust-based influence has never been more important.

Buyers no longer work with you just because "that's how it's done." They need to feel certain that your guidance and expertise are worth their investment. They need to trust you at a profound level.

Mastering Communication gives you the deeper understanding necessary to create that level of trust—the kind that transcends transaction details and market conditions.

💬 Looking Forward

As we move forward with this expanded approach, I'm looking forward to seeing how it deepens your practice and accelerates your journey toward mastery.

Remember, Tactical Empathy is still the core. We're not replacing it—we're enriching it, contextualizing it, and providing you with the deeper understanding that makes true mastery possible.

In the coming weeks, I'll be sharing more specific insights from this expanded framework, showing you how the psychological and emotional foundations can enhance your use of the tools you already know.

Until then, keep practicing your Labels, Mirrors, and Calibrated Questions. And as you do, start getting curious about the "why" behind them. What emotional responses are they triggering? What psychological needs are they addressing? What unconscious patterns are they disrupting?

That curiosity—that desire to understand the deeper human dynamics at play—is the first step toward Mastering Communication.

My guidance to you remains–Empathy First!
