The Obstacle Is The Way
It is official.
I am going to say what no one wants to say or hear...
However...
The truth is the truth.
Panic is beginning to set in.
Agents are running out of money...
Agents are slashing expenses...
Agents are contemplating leaving the business.
If you are feeling any of these things...
YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!
The 2023 real estate market is going to push you to your limits.
It doesn't make a difference how long you have been in the business.
It doesn't make a difference what you have done in years past.
Your production is irrelevant...
Your market share is irrelevant...
Your ranking is irrelevant.
2023 is going to test you and challenge you in every way imaginable.
Over the next three weeks, I am going to share my notes from Ryan Holiday's book The Obstacle Is The Way.
2023 is about one thing - MINDSET!!
If you do not give your best effort this year...
You may not make it.
To give your best effort... it all starts with Mindset.
Please read these thoughts carefully.
You must get your head in the right space to keep moving forward in a productive way!

The Obstacle Is The Way by Ryan Holiday
Life does not stop. Life keeps coming at you with one obstacle after another.
Setbacks and problems are always to be expected.
We want to make certain that what impedes us can empower us.
The world is going to test you constantly. Are you worthy? Can you get past the things that arise in your way? Will you stand up and show what you are made of?
Certain things in life will cut you open like a knife. When this happens, the world gets a glimpse of what is truly inside you. So what will be revealed when you are sliced open by tension and pressure? Iron? Air? Or bullshit?
Behind every mountain is another mountain.
The goal is simple… not easy, turn adversity into your advantage.
Great individuals find a way to transform weaknesses into strengths.
Nobody is born with a steel backbone. We have to forge it ourselves.
The path of least resistance is a terrible teacher.
We can’t afford to shy away from the things that intimidate us.
Overcoming obstacles is a discipline of three critical steps:
1. Perception – how we look at our specific problems, our attitude, and how we approach things.
2. Action – the energy and creativity with which we break obstacles down and turn them into opportunities.
3. Will – the cultivation and maintenance of an inner strength that allows us to handle defeat and difficulty.
Perception – What is Perception? It is how we see and understand what occurs around us – and what we decide those events will mean.
Our perceptions can be a source of great strength or of great weakness
If we are emotional, subjective, and short-sighted, we only add to our troubles.
What matters most is not that we face obstacles…
What matters most is how we see them and whether we keep our composure.
We have a choice in terms of how we respond to any given situation.
Discipline in perception lets you clearly see the advantage and the proper course of action in every situation – without the pestilence of panic or fear.
When faced with a seemingly insurmountable obstacle, we must try:
- to be objective
- to control emotions and keep an even keel
- to choose to see the good in a situation
- to steady our nerves
- to ignore what disturbs or limits others
- to place things in perspective
- to revert to the present moment
- to focus on what can be controlled
We decide what we will make of each and every situation.
Life is neutral/ indifferent. There is no good or bad without us, there is only perception. There is the event itself and the story we tell ourselves about what it means.
Obstacles can make us emotional, but the only way to survive them is by keeping our emotions in check. Focus on the positive and don’t let the negative emotions take over.
Know what is up to you and what is not.
The people who accomplish great things understand the difference between what you control and what you don’t control.
Focusing exclusively on what is in your power, enhances your power.
To see an obstacle as a true opportunity is a choice that only we can make.
What matters most in any situation is what is happening right now.
Stay out of the future and stay in the present moment.
And remember this moment is not your life, it is just a moment of your life.
Our perceptions determine to an incredibly large degree, what we are capable of and what we are not capable of.
The extent of the struggle determines the extent of the growth.
The obstacle is an advantage, not an adversity.
The enemy is any perception that prevents us from seeing this.
Everything can be flipped.
Once you see the world as it is, for what it is, you must act.
Decide to tackle that which stands in your way.
Boldness is acting anyway, even though you understand the negative and the reality of your obstacle.
Action requires courage, not brashness.
Action is a test of character.
In life, it doesn’t matter what happens to you or where you come from. It matters what you do with what happens and what you have been given.
No one is coming to save you.
It’s okay to be discouraged. It’s not okay to quit.
Everything we do matters.
Whatever we face, our job is to respond with:
- hard work
- honesty
- helping others as best we can
You should never have to ask yourself – What am I supposed to do? You know the answer and it is always the same – DO YOUR JOB!!
In every situation, life is asking us a question, and our actions are the answer.
How you do anything is how you can do everything. You can always act right.
Think progress, not perfection.
Ordinary people shy away from negative situations, just as they do with failure. They do their best to avoid trouble. What great people do is the opposite. They are their best in the toughest of situations.
Life favors the bold and the brave.
At certain moments in our brief existence we are going to be faced with great trials.
Use these trials to catapult yourself forward!!
What we can’t do is control the world around us – not as much as we’d like to do.
We might perceive things well, then act rightly, and fail anyway.
However, nothing can ever prevent you from trying.
In every situation, that which blocks our path actually presents a new path with a new part of us.
Problems are a chance for us to do our best.
