MINDSET OVER EVERYTHING
I want to go back to my favorite topic this week - MINDSET.
No matter what situation you find yourself in, good or bad... it is always about Mindset.
Too many agents spend far too much time thinking about either the market on one end of the spectrum or magic pills on the other end.
Conversely, most agents don't spend enough time working on their Mindset.
Getting your head on straight is more important than anything else.
Last night I had dinner with Robert Reffkin, founder and CEO of Compass. There is no better example of Mindset than Robert.
No matter what he is working on... he is trying to get better. He is the stoic principle of The Obstacle Is The Way personified.
His passion and enthusiasm is fueled by one thing (in my opinion)... helping others and, specifically... helping others achieve their best in life.
There is no limit to what he will do to realize this mission in life.
This is a man who is committed and focused and above all... CURIOUS!! He is always learning, always trying to figure things out... the bigger the challenge... the better.
Again... the market is irrelevant to his purpose in life... magic pills are useless... it is simply about doing the work and doing it better than everyone else.
In life and certainly in real estate... you learn by doing. Real estate is not rocket science. Everyone who gets into this business starts at ground zero. It is only through trial and error that you figure things out. As you set out on your journey, you are going to make mistakes. You are going to encounter disappointment. You are going to experience frustration. Things will never go as quickly or as smoothly as you want. You will have to deal with defeat and rejection all along the way. These perceived defeats and rejections will sting and feel very personal (even though they are never personal and always temporary).
If you are not failing often in your real estate business, it is only because you are not taking enough risk and not trying hard enough. Getting comfortable being uncomfortable is the path to success.
Remember - you are NOT the center of the universe. It is NOT about you. It is about helping others... being of service... no matter what that looks like.
In this business where everyone wears their GCI on their forehead... it is easy to forget this business is truly about HELPING PEOPLE!!
If you are in real estate long enough, you will go through tough times and down years. It is inevitable. There will be stretches in this business when it seems like everyone and everything is against you. Cherish these moments. This is a good thing. Being battle-tested in life is a positive. There is nothing wrong with a few scars and bruises to keep you humble. When you are in these moments and you feel your back up against the wall and your mind is trying to convince you the end is near and you can't go on... these are the moments that change your life for the better. Embrace them, don't fight them.
Tomorrow I am doing a one-hour talk with Robert at Compass HQ. I hope everyone in New York will attend in person (Trump and all). Otherwise, the event will be live streamed.
This is an opportunity to hear a real warrior (Robert) in action. You will not meet anyone who is more convicted in what he believes and you will not meet someone who is more willing to give everything he has to the people in his life, both personally and professionally.
